Along for the Ride

by Sarah Dessen

Auden West has just graduated from high school. She has always been serious and academic, throwing herself into her school work in order to cope with her parents constant arguing and eventual divorce. Auden's parents always depended on the fact that she was very mature for her age. They never really saw her as a child. Growing up, Auden never spent time hanging out with friends, going to school dances, or doing anything that others her age considered fun.

As she tries to look forward to college and her future, she can't help feeling that she has missed out somehow. She's just not sure what exactly she has missed out on. In an attempt to have something in her life that she can call "the best of times" she decides to spend the summer with her dad, stepmom, and new baby sister. And it's there, in the small east coast town of Colby, North Carolina, that she realized she has missed out on childhood and friendship.

The author digs deep into the complexities of relationships, but also gives a good taste of summertime fun.
