In the not too distant future the United States has regressed to a group of 12 colonies ruled by an oppressive government. Each year to punish the rogue colonies for their past rebellion the Capitol requires each colony to send two teenagers to the Hunger Games to compete in a survivor style battle. Twenty four teens enter the arena, only one leaves. Is it the strongest or the smartest?
Katniss, a sixteen year old girl from the poorest colony, 12, is sent to the arena and knows very well what she is up against. Televised throughout the nation, citizens can watch the contestants in real time trapped in the wilderness shiver, starve and battle each other to live. With only a flask for water and her wits, Katniss must kill or be killed. But waht if your opponant in this life saved your life in the last?
With futuristic technology and a gritty back drop, Collins illustrates effectivly what happens when civility dies and survival is the main course. Mutated animals, constant servaillence and a healthy dose of alterior motives makes this potentially animalistic story smart and riveting. Although aimed at young adults, this fantasy could please any cheerleader for the under dog.
