Jane Austen Ruined My Life

by Beth Pattillo

Emma Douglas was happy. She was a college instructor, Jane Austen scholar, and married to an esteemed university professor. Then her world was turned upside down. She discovers that her marriage was not as happy as she believed it to be and her academic career has been ruined by one false accusation. She blames her beloved Jane Austen, who led her to believe that she would simply get married and have a happy ending.

A short time after Emma's life seemingly falls apart, she is contacted by Mrs. Parrot, a woman in England who claims to have information on Jane Austen's lost letters. So Emma goes to England, hoping to find just what she needs to restore her credibility in the academic world. But it's not as easy as she thought it would be. There are certain things that Mrs. Parrot requires Emma to do before she will share the valuable information with her.

Furthermore, Emma had not expected to find Adam in England. Adam had been her best friend in college, but she hasn't seen him in over ten years. Their friendship ended the day she got married.

As Emma searches for the truth about Jane Austen, she also makes some important discoveries about herself.

This was a very entertaining book with interesting facts about the life of Jane Austen (although, the author did use poetic license to fabricate certain events in her life). Also, it does refer to the novels of Jane Austen, but it is not necessary to have read them in order to understand the book.

Light reading of a young woman's self-discovery. She initially blames her upbringing and Jane Austen for her naive beliefs but later realizes that she is responsible for herself. Her realizations and acceptance of the other dear people in her life is the best part of the story, which unfortunately is at the end! I think her story is just beginning!
