Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
Set in Seattle, the story jumps between 1980's and 1940's. In the 1940's, Henry Lee, a young Chinese boy who was born in the US befriends a Japanese girl at the "white" private school where they are both "scholarship" students. This book captures the fear surrounding all Asians during WWII, the living conditions of the "relocation centers", the conflicts between parents and children as they come of age, and the perseverance of love. A gentle, bittersweet story. JES
