Most sportswriters are athletes who happen to be able to write. Rick Reilly, a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, is that rare exception. He is a writer who happens to love sports. The quality of his writing is notable through everything he publishes, making his books accessible to nearly everyone.
In "Who's your Caddy? Looping for the Great, Near Great and Reprobates of Golf," Reilly takes us on a wild backstage tour of golf, by caddying for a variety of famous golfers and celebrities, then taking us along for the ride. ('Looping' is slang for caddying golf.)
In this book, Reilly caddies for great golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Lehman and David Duval. But he also caddies for John Daly, golf's bad boy with the huge drive and huge drinking problem, and Casey Martin, the handicapped golfer who won his fight to use a golf cart in competitive golf. Then, just for fun, he takes us golfing with celebrities such as Donald Trump, Deepak Chopra, and Bob Newhart.
Each chapter is different, each one is wildly entertaining, and each chapter helps us to see golf from a slightly different perspective. I actually listened to this book while driving on business, and more than once found myself sitting in a parking lot finishing a chapter before getting on with my business. That's how much I enjoyed this book.
If you have a golfer in your family, even if they are only a duffer like me, be sure they get a chance to read this book. It is available at the Morton Library in hardcover, or as a recorded book on cd.
And if you are inspired to read more about golf, here are some other excellent books on the subject, all available at the MPL:
The Tiger Woods Way by John Andrisani
The Majors by John Feinstein
Miracle on the 17th Green: a novel by James Patterson
There are also several excellent golf movies in our DVD section, such as The Legend of Bagger Vance, The Greatest Game Ever Played and David Leadbetter Golf Instruction - The Swing.
So though golf season may be nearly over in Illinois, you can keep enjoying your favorite sport all year round.
John H.
