PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY, Gary Moore

Illinois author (Gary Moore), recounts the mystery of his father's life. After his father, Gene's, near fatal heart attack, Gary digs into his father's life growing up in a small town in southern Illinois. To his surprise he finds that Gene had a passion and talent for baseball so strong that he was headed to be a major league player. And why hadn't Gene ever told his family about his purple heart? This story ranges from Illinois to North Africa in WWII to a prisoner of war camp in Louisiana. Gene shows his strengths as a team leader and an ability to relate to people regardless of their nationality. We gradually learn the painful circumstances that put an end to his major league career. To Gene, he not only lost a career, he lost his life. While Gene always secretly mourned his lost identity, eventually he was able to recognize that he was on the best team of all--his family.
