Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson

This book club favorite is a moving story of a mountaineer who went astray returning from a failed attempt to climb K2 in Pakistan. Grateful to the villagers who saved his life, he vowed to return to build a school. "Three Cups of Tea" is the story of that promise. Greg describes his childhood in Africa and his father who raised money to build a hospital, but never stresses the fact that his adult like has been spent following his father's pattern in another poor country. He makes mistakes, some that could have resulted in his death, he lacks direction and he is an ineffective fundraiser who stumbles on a wealthy sponsor. He is also sensitive to cultural differences and has a talent for adapting to his hosts lifestyle while attempting to improve educational opportunities for the most isolated people.
Read it and celebrate the fact that Americans, acting on their best instincts to help others, can make a difference in the world. JES
